Two words. Blan-co. Get your guild together and you can kill him really fast, as well as getting good loot and awesome gold.
And about gold runs... don't do them. They take too long and generally won't give you enough gold. You could randomly get 1500 gold from killing Blanco once, or get it from sailing around for 15 minutes.

I would say SvS Bounty Exchange would be the fastest way to earn gold.
